It’s good to have options, which is why the recent release of another neurotoxin to combat wrinkles is exciting news. Jeuveau (prabotulinumtoxinA) which rhymes with “hello”, comes from the French word, “nouveau”, which means “new” or “modern.” In fact, Jeuveau is referred to as the “new Botox.”
What is Jeuveau?
Jeuveau belongs to a class of medications known as “neurotoxins.” Similar to other neurotoxins used for cosmetic purposes, Jeuveau’s “toxin” is botulinum toxin type A, which is made from the bacteria that causes botulism. When this toxin is injected into muscles, the release of a neurotransmitter called acetylcholine is impaired, preventing the muscle from contracting. The relaxing of the muscle results in smoothing of the dynamic wrinkles that superficially lie perpendicular to the muscle.
The first neurotoxin to be FDA-approved for cosmetic use was Botox (onabotulinumtoxinA) in 2002 for the glabella (frown lines). Later, Botox also received FDA-approval for the “crow’s feet” in 2013, and then the forehead lines in 2017. Botox is the only medication to have FDA-approval for either the “crow’s feet” or the forehead. In 1989, Botox received its first FDA-approval for blepharospasm (a therapeutic indication). In 2009, Dysport (abobotulinumtoxinA) was FDA-approved for use in the glabella (it’s only FDA-clearance). This was followed by Xeomin (incobotulinumtoxinA) in 2011, which also only has an FDA-approval for the glabella/frown lines. Lastly, Jeuveau was recently approved by the FDA in 2019 for…you guessed it…the glabellar lines.
How does Jeuveau compare to other neurotoxins?
Jeuveau has a similar molecular weight to Botox (900 kD), versus the lighter Dysport (a mixture of 300 kD and 500 kD proteins) and Xeomin (150kD). Heavier proteins such as Botox and Jeuveau are thought to diffuse less after injection, making the injections more “precise,” but possibly be more immunogenic (likely to stimulate an immune response).
Jeuveau, being the most recent addition to the neurotoxin market, is typically priced less than its competitors.
A recent study published in the Aesthetic Surgery Journal compared Jeuveau to Botox and placebo. In the study, 20 units of either drug or placebo (0.9% saline) was injected into the glabella, and patients were reevaluated at 2, 14, 30, 90, 120, and 150 days. The official conclusions of the study state that Jeuveau “was safe and effective and noninferior to” Botox.
In May of 2019, Pura Vida Medical Spa performed a split face case study on a volunteer that was featured on social media. On the patient’s right side, Botox was injected in the forehead, “crows feet,” and nasalis. Jeaveau was injected into the same areas on the left in the same doses (Botox and Jeuveau are bioequivalent at the same dose). The glabella was injected solely with Jeuveau. One day after the injections, a noticeable improvement was seen in the forehead that was symmetric in both the Botox and Jeuveau sides. This symmetric improvement continued for an additional 48 hours. The “crows feet” appeared to symmetrically improve over the first 72 hours, however the volunteer subjectively felt that the Jeuveau side had significantly outpaced the Botox side in terms of rapidity of progress. The nasalis was noted to have symmetric improvement at day 7. The results in the glabellar region, which was solely treated with Jeuveau, lagged behind the forehead and did not have significant improvement until the third day after the injection. Different muscle groups may respond more rapidly to neurotoxin due to muscle size and thickness. In summary, the Pura Vida volunteer’s results, similar to the Aesthetic Surgery Journal results, revealed no evidence of inferiority of Jeuveau as compared to Botox in terms of either onset of effect or significance of effect.
